2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale vs. Maserati Grecale Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos
For those who want something a bit out of the ordinary, Alfa Romeo and Maserati have always delivered the best of Italian performance and design. Beautifully sculpted exteriors, interiors that fit like a finely tailored suit, and performance that quickens your pulse – these brands make vehicles for automotive enthusiasts. The only downside to this is that both brands do it so well that it can be a bit difficult to tell what sets them apart from each other. That’s why we’ve put together this comparison of each brand’s smallest SUVs, the Alfa Romeo Tonale and the Maserati Grecale.

Here we can see a principal difference between these two vehicles. The Grecale uses a traditional gasoline engine to send power to all four wheels, with an emphasis on horsepower and blisteringly quick 0-60 times. The Tonale uses a plug-in hybrid system that also makes for some impressive performance, but here it’s mixed with efficiency, and even up to 30 miles of all-electric driving on a single charge. For the GT and Modena trims of the Grecale, power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is tuned for 296 horsepower in the GT and 325 horsepower in the Modena. For the top Trofeo trim level, Maserati replaces the four-cylinder engine with a V6, specifically the twin-turbo Nettuno V6 from the MC20 sports car, which makes 523 horsepower. This version of the Grecale is noticeably quicker than anything else in this comparison.

Size is the other area where we see a pretty substantial difference between these two vehicles. That’s to be expected, as the Grecale is classified as a compact, while the Tonale is a subcompact. It’s hard to miss the difference when the two are side by side, as the Grecale is more than a foot longer, and more than four inches wider. So you have more interior space with the Grecale, but the Tonale is going to be easier to get in and out of parking spaces and other tight squeezes. Ironically, even though the Grecale is physically larger, the Tonale has more cargo capacity. Maserati devoted more interior space to passengers, and although that may have reduced its cargo area, more space for occupants certainly has its own advantages.

Alfa Romeo Tonale VS Maserati Grecale Conclusion

Each of these SUVs comes with a set of strengths that set it apart from the other, and that makes the job of picking which one is best for you a lot easier. That’s not to say that the Tonale isn’t quick, or that the Grecale isn’t easy to maneuver in a parking garage, but the emphasis is on different things for each vehicle. The Tonale has its small size and plug-in hybrid drivetrain that make it at home in the city, while those who need to carry backseat passengers or want more power will find the Grecale to be more suited to their needs. But the best thing about comparing these two vehicles is that, no matter which vehicle works best for you, you always end up with an incredible SUV.
